- The CIEMAT, being a unique nuclear facility, has numerous activities focused on the study of radioactive isotopes to comply, among others, with the functions entrusted to it by the Nuclear Safety Council, referring to both regulatory tasks and surveillance. radiology of the Center, as well as specific agreements with other organizations or entities in relation to the activity measurements of certain isotopes, such as Sr-90, Y-90, Cs-137, Am-241, Cm-244, Pu-238, U, etc.
The administrative need to satisfy is the acquisition of two equipment spectrometry that analyzes samples using the liquid scintillation technique, since it is the only technique currently that allows measuring residual activity concentrations of isotopes. The analysis of these concentrations is of special relevance in the dismantling of the facilities, in the stages prior to spills, in source tightness tests, as well as, for better management of spent nuclear fuel, both from the point of view of its evolution and behavior in different storage conditions, and for advanced management thereof.
